Tips for a Perfect Sailing Charter
Please note this is considered to be an adult activity, however, children are welcome on board by arrangement and depending on conditions. No special child rates available
Children
Outeniqua offers a sophisticated sailing experience tailored for adults seeking relaxation. If you’re planning to bring children, please ensure they are under constant parental supervision. For safety reasons, young children are required to wear life jackets at all times while onboard. Our crew is happy to assist with sailing and service but cannot act as childcare providers. Standard adult rates apply to all passengers.
Sea sickness
Better safe than sorry, right? If you’re a first-time sailor, you might want to prep for motion sickness. Grab some meds at your local pharmacy or consult your doc for prescription options. Just check the label – most need to be taken a few hours before departure, so don’t leave it to the last minute! If you’re feeling off, check out our tips below for some quick relief.
A few helpful hints if you start to feel queasy
If you’re prone to sea sickness, catching it early is key! Try these simple tips to help you sail smoothly: nibble on crackers and sip ginger ale to keep something in your stomach and fix your gaze on the horizon to help your body find its balance. Stay hydrated, but avoid heavy meals, and get some fresh air on deck. Ginger candies or acupressure bands can also do the trick, and sitting in the centre of the boat can reduce the motion. With these hacks, you’ll be breezing through the waves in no time!
A good breakfast is key!
Very often people will go on their first trip fearing they may get sick and will skip breakfast or lunch assuming that no food in their stomach means they won’t get sick. In fact, the opposite is true. An empty stomach produces acids and can actually make you sick. Eat a good carbohydrate breakfast and rather avoid fatty or fried foods.
Keep hydrated
Don’t get dehydrated! When on the ocean it is recommended that you keep hydrated by drinking water or ginger ale but avoid drinks that are high in sugars. We have a full service cash bar available for you.
Keep Warm!
It is always colder on the ocean than on land. Dress in layers and bring extra clothes. Sometimes on choppy days people can get wet and chilled. We will supply you with lovely warm blankets for those extra chilly days.
Footwear
No shoes onboard! We’re protecting our teak deck, so please pop your shoes in the provided shoe bag as you board. Your shoes will be waiting for you on the jetty at the end of the charter. If you’re not into bare feet, bring some socks with grip to avoid slipping – or to keep your toes toasty in winter!
Don’t forget the sunblock and sunglasses!
Water reflects and magnifies the sun rays. Without protection you can get severely sunburned during your trip. Be sure to bring your sunglasses to protect your eyes from glare on the water.
