A Sailing Legend on the Garden Route Coastline
In the heart of Plettenberg Bay, a masterpiece was born. Steff Pepler brought to life the 50ft Sovereign sloop mono hull yacht, Outeniqua, with dreams of sailing the world. But as it turned out, the world had other plans. Instead of taking Steff on a global adventure, Outeniqua has brought the world to Knysna, inviting travellers to experience the thrill of sailing on the stunning Garden Route coastline.
Launched with fanfare at the Knysna Quays in 1998, Outeniqua’s story is one of freedom, thrill, and breathtaking beauty. This 13-ton gem boasts a 21m mast, 4m beam, and a fixed keel that glides through the waters with ease. Her teak deck, now bleached blonde by sun and sea, is spacious and comfortable for up to 12 passengers.
As you step aboard, you’ll experience the charm of old school sailing, with Outeniqua’s traditional rigging and sail handling techniques offering a unique and authentic sailing experience. Our expert crew, well-versed in the art of traditional sailing, will guide you through the iconic Knysna Heads, past towering sandstone cliffs and into the heart of the estuary. Imagine the wind in your hair, the sun on your face, and the thrill of sailing along this magnificent coastline, powered by the wind and the sea.
Outeniqua offers the perfect blend of adventure and romance – an exhilarating sail through the Heads, followed by a classic sunset cruise, with the golden light dancing across the water.
What is a mono hull yacht?
A monohull yacht is a type of boat with a single hull (the main body of the ship). It’s different from multihull yachts like catamarans (two hulls) or trimarans (three hulls).
Monohull vs Catamaran: Two Very Different Kinds of Sailing
Think of the ocean as a dance floor.
A catamaran likes to stroll across it—flat, steady, and comfortable. It’s great for floating, lounging, and sipping something cold while the sea does most of the work. In open ocean conditions, though, it tends to travel more than it truly sails.
A monohull, on the other hand, comes to dance.
With one hull slicing through the water, a monohull heels gracefully, feels the wind, and responds to every shift in sail and sea. You don’t just move across the ocean—you engage with it. You feel the wind build, the sails power up, and the boat come alive beneath you.
In these waters, a monohull delivers a more authentic, thrilling sailing experience:
- More responsive to wind
- More dynamic motion
- More connection to the sea
If your idea of sailing is about the joy of the journey, not just the destination, a monohull is where the magic happens.
