One of the reasons we love humpbacks so much is because they love to sing. It is the only whale species that sings, and their song is believed to be the animal kingdom’s most complex, some songs lasting over 30 minutes. Only the males sing and interestingly, just as people living across different geographical areas speak different languages, whales occupying different areas sing different songs.
Despite years of research however, marine biologists are yet to grasp the complexities behind their underwater vocal repertoire. Ocean Odyssey’s permitted close encounter vessel is fitted with a hydrophone, so passengers can experience the remarkable humpback whale song on-board, which serves to heighten the thrill of our whale watching tours!
We also collaborate with ConserBio who together with The Department of Environmental Affairs (Branch Oceans & Coasts) have deployed hydrophones in the area. These instruments are constantly recording sounds from whales and dolphins. Listen to the haunting songs of these mysterious creatures.
